Yogas chitta vritti nirodha: Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind – Yoga Sutras

Yogah karmasu kaushalam: Yoga is skill or perfection in action – Bhagavad Gita

Samatvam yoga uchyate: Yoga is equanimity and balance, whether in success or failure – Bhagavad Gita

Taraka means “star” or “belonging to the stars” in Sanskrit; it also means “to free, to rescue, to take to the other side”

About Taraka

At Taraka Yoga, we´re interested in sharing this ancient knowledge with our students. In order to know our true nature, we must be familiar with each aspect of our being: body, breath, emotions, intellect and mind. This is how our yoga practice helps us understand not only our body, but that we are much more than our body. The practice also helps us better relate to those around us through ethical guidelines, practices and disciplines.

Only through experiencing union with one another, the idea that we are all one, can we feel the union with that which goes beyond the body and the mind, beyond the physical world, beyond the mind’s limitations. We are working towards creating a family, a tribe, a community that is interested in working on ourselves (our yoga practice) in the studio and also in our everyday lives. That’s why we don´t limit our practice to only postures or physical exercises, but we hope to practice with each step, each word, and each thought to live in contentment and harmony with all beings and with the entire world.

Yoga

Rocket Yoga

Rocket yoga is a strong, fun practice full of challenges that work the physical body, the concentration and body awareness/intelligence needed to properly manage your energy levels during the practice.

learn more..

It is a combination and restructuring of the Primary, Intermediate and Advanced Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Rocket is known for focusing on arm balances and inversions needed to “flow” through challenging vinyasas and postures.

This dynamic practice is called “The Rocket” because “it gets your there faster.” Rocket is designed to wake and feed your nervous system with lots of prana while promoting a sense of freedom and openness to personal creativity and expression. There are a wide variety of variations and modifications to make this class more accessible to students of different levels; the only real requirement is an open heart and a desire to work and smile.

Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda yoga is a traditional Hatha Yoga class that combines a focus on the physical practice of asanas along with breathing, meditation, and devotion, including yoga philosophy based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda.

learn more..

This lineage is based on the classic yogic paths (Karma, Bhakti, Raja and Jñana Yogas) and the 5 Points of Yoga (Proper Exercise, Proper Breath, Proper Rest, Proper Diet and Positive Thinking and Meditation)

Sivananda Yoga is centered around relaxation and avoids rapid movements so as to not agitate the mind. Different from other modern practices, in Sivananda there are only 12 basic postures (along with their many variations) and a short savasana is practiced in between most poses. This leads to a peaceful mind in the practitioner and a profound experience during the final relaxation. Along with the poses, the class includes mantras and pranayamas.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa is a style of yoga in which the students flow and grow to the rhythm of their breath, culminating in a movement meditation, as each inhalation and exhalation accompanies a specific movement.

learn more..

The purpose of vinyasa yoga is to connect to that flow state while purifying the body. The combination of movement and breath allows the blood to circulate through all our joints, improving our range of movement and increasing overall mobility. But most important to finding that “flow state” that students strive for to help calm the mind and improve their concentration.

The heat that is generated helps remove impurities from the body through its natural process of sweating. If the vinyasas is performed correctly, the body becomes healthy and strong.

Dharma

Dharma Yoga is a devotional clase with a sequence of movements that allow you to progress deeply in your physical practice while opening your heart, physically and spiritually.

learn more..

Dharma classes are based  on a classic Hatha Raja yoga system. Its devotional nature gives you a solid path towards physical health, a clear relaxed mind, and an open loving heart.

Sadhana (2 hours)

We offer a special class on the weekend. As we have more time, we start with a dynamic asana practice (we´ll play around with the Rocket sequence in a “workshop” type setting)

learn more..

After the postures, we´ll practice Yoga Nidra during savasana or final relaxation. Nidra is a deep, guided meditation with profound benefits. We´ll close the session with Bhakti Yoga and kirtan, in which we´ll chant devotional mantras together with the harmonium. That’s how we take advantage of our Saturdays, working body, mind and heart, together in sangha (community).

Satsang Kirtan (donation based)

Satsang means a community of like minded people that come together to search for the truth. It’s the community of friends we create to support and inspire us on our journey. Every wednesday we meet up to practice together a little meditation, kirtan and study.

learn more..

We start with a short meditation to focus the mind and set our intention. Then we do kirtan, a traditional Bhakti Yoga practice, the yoga of devotion. We sing mantras together, in a call and response format, to purify the mind and open the heart. In between songs,  we´ll hear short talks about yoga philosophy, the stories of Hindu gods, and other related topics.
This is a free class open to everyone, so bring your friends, and no experience is necessary.  If you feel moved to support the community and studio, you may leave a donation at the end, but it is entirely up to you and not mandatory.

Teachers

Mark

Mark Hanuman is a playful, dedicated student of yoga who has been given the amazing privilege of sharing this timeless wisdom with others. He was certified in Sivananda Yoga in 2010 in the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas, where he lived, studied and taught yoga for a year and where he received his spiritual name “Hanuman.” He is fortunate to be invited back each year to the Bahamas and other ashrams to continue studying as well as leading classes, courses, and teacher trainings.  He was certified in Rocket Yoga in 2014 by his friend and teacher David Kyle, with whom he studied for many years in Puerto Rico, while also teaching at his studio.

For the past 10 years he has lived in Mexico, and he started by opening a yoga studio in Querétaro, which he had for 8 years. A few years ago, he moved to the Riviera Nayarit and traveled around the country giving Rocket and Sivananda masterclasses, philosophy courses, kirtans and yoga teacher training certifications. He’s very excited to bring all that experience and knowledge that his incredible teachers and mentors have given him to this new project, Taraka Yoga in Puerto Vallarta

His classes are fun and energetic, informed by his years as an actor, singer and dancer. He believes that the true power of yoga extends far beyond just the physical benefits; it has the power to transform every practitioner’s energy, mind, and, ultimately, their reality. With love, discipline, and faith, Everything is Possible

ERIKA DURAN

Erika is a yoga student for approximately 10 years who has had the privilege of learning and sharing various aspects of this beautiful discipline. She later studied at the Sivananda Bahamas ashram where she performed her karma yoga service until she was certified in San Rafael, Colombia in 2018. In 2021 she took her first certification in CDMX with David Kyle from Rocket Vinyasa Yoga and finally in 2022 he got certified with his friend and teacher Mark Hanuman.

For Erika, yoga is a way of life where we can find peace and harmony in body, mind and spirit.

PAOLA CONTRERAS
